Chemicals – Sensitisers

Please find below a list of chemicals used in Baldonnel (past and or present) that are known chemical sensitisers. As sensitisers these chemicals are usually classed as either contact or respiratory sensitisers however we are investigating whether exposure via inhalation can trigger anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, idiopathic pain & Irritable Bowel Syndrome due to an immunological reaction.

Once a person is sensitised to a chemical, further exposure appears to lead to an excessive immune system response to even very small amounts of the trigger chemical. Sentitised individuals end up unable to tolerate chemicals at levels easily tolerated by persons with no sensitisation.

Air Corps Sensitisers

Chemical NameNotes
Bis(pentamethylenethiuram)tetrasulfide
Barium ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
Calcium DichromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
EpichlorohydrinUsed in glues, epoxies and resins.
Hexamethylene diisocyanateSee Isocyanates below.
Hydrofluoric AcidCan melt glass but also a skin sensitiser
IsocyanatesUsed in the manufacture of almost all polyurethane foams, paints & plastics. The problem here is that once sensitised, for example by unprotected exposure to aircraft paints, then other polyurethanes will constantly trigger a response even at home such as wall insulation, carpet underlay, cushions, expanding foam, glues, sofas, mattresses & pillows. Polyeurothane is also found in car plastics & building cladding. Be sure to air your home and air your car on hot days as this causes the plastics to leach Isocyanate gasses.
Limonene
Magnesium ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
Methyl 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl sebacate
Orange Terpenes
Potassium ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
Potassium DichromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
Sodium ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
Strontium ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers
RosinThis was used as a soldering flux in Avionics Squadron and Air Support Company Signals.
1,1,1-TrichloroethaneDegreaser. Banned in 1996 as an Ozone depleter.
Zinc ChromateAll hexavalent chromium compounds known sensitisers

As we research ECHA classification chemicals in use this list of known sensitisers is expected to grow.
