Chemicals – Photo Section

Below is a listing of individual chemicals substances found as constituent ingredients in the photographic processing chemicals used by Photo Section at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel.

The Irish Air Corps has always had a photographic role and was equipped with darkrooms for the development & printing of black & white, colour and infrared film.  Some of these chemicals were dangerous and is the case with personnel in other locations Health & Safety training was lacking and so poor chemical hygiene was the norm to the extent that many of the chemicals below were mixed upon the same table photo section personnel used to eat their lunch.

Many of the chemicals listed are toxic, corrosive, target specific organs or are otherwise harmful to health. however in the table below we specifically tag whether they are known carcinogen, a known mutagen, a reproductive toxin either a respiratory or skin sensitiser or toxic.

For decades Air Corps Photographic Section was located in the Main Block at Baldonnel and so personnel in Air Sp Coy Sigs, Intelligence Section, Majors Office & Medical Aid Post were exposed without protection nor even knowledge of exposure.

This is a work in progress
